Freedom and Control

Having a child has fast proven to be one of the best experiences of my life.  There’s something about having a mini human run around the house that I find enjoyable and amusing.  However, it would appear that I’m raising a dictator and the world could be in danger.

I seem to have become a slave to a boss a third of my size!  Walking in the door from work generally means it’s colouring time or god forbid riding on the trike of sadness (mine not the child’s!).  I feel myself constantly walking a fine line between ensure my child is entertained while not embracing their every whim.

Being a guardian of a mini human comes with a certain amount of responsibility.  The world is full of entitled morons and you should do your damnedest not to add another one to the mix but running your own mini military camp for toddlers is probably overdoing things.

I try to ensure that I keep my child engaged and enjoy the time we spend together (Hell, between play time and walking the dogs that’s the only exercise I get currently) but also make sure that I don’t spend my life getting dictated to.

I don’t pretend that I have the right balance and don’t know what the right balance is, what I know is that every child is different and we are trying our best to raise a strong but respectful human.  I like to think that I have this parenting thing sorted (do any of us?) and I am successfully walking the line between allowing freedom but maintaining control and I hope that that’s enough.

If my child every becomes your boss and you get dictated to due to my bad parenting then I apologise. Just know I tried!

A shout out for the working partners!

I think in general when a lot of us look at the world we see a lot that doesn’t feel right.   Global warming, racial issues, rising cost of living, and a myriad of other issues create a world that is flawed. We as a general population have the desire to improve the world that we and our children live in.   We might not do as much as we should have, we do believe in striving for a better world. Something we have been making progress (perhaps not as fast as we should!) with is equal rights for men and women.   Its something that most decent people see as logical that if we do the same task, we get the same benefit. Parenting is one of those items where the older stereotypes still break through.   Although you do see more fathers taking on the hefty parenting work in most cases it is still the mother who is home with the children while the father works. In any family environment there is generally one parent who works full time and another who works pa...

Time to stop comparing my children to others

Like many parents I have found it fascinating watching mini humans evolve over time.   When you become an adult our variations and improvements are generally smaller often indistinguishable changes.   The basic framework for us as people has been built over many years of learning and experiences.   But there is something absolutely fascinating at watching a small person find their way in the world. Like all parents I like to think I have gifted offspring and like all parents there might be some truth to that but largely my children are no more gifted than the norm.   This isn’t a bad thing and there is nothing stopping all children from doing exceptional things in so many different areas however looking at a small child and declaring them as gifted fails to understand the most basic human element. We are all different. I have a daughter who is the apple of my eye.   When you spend time with them, they always amaze you with things that they learn.  ...
